T he Lions club, and wives of both groups w ere also present. Rep. E llsw o rth stressed the needs of this area for tra n s p o r tation. both highw ay and th e need for h arb o r facilities. He explained th e problem w ith th - harb o r, saying th a t approval had been given a t one tim e for Chet co R iver m outh im provem ent. E llsw o rth said fu r th e r th at th e C heteo m outh im provem ent would provide a haven for sm all boats, but no m ore, w hile th e Cove an chorage would provide for la rg e r ships but would involve a con sid erab le ex p en d itu re. He asked th a t th e people of this com m unity decide w hat they w ant in h arb o r facilities and w ork to w ard s th a t goal. As an in te re stin g p reface to his talk E llsw o rth told about th e recent shooting on th e capital floor in which five congressm en w ere w ounded by P u e rto Rican N ationals. He said th a t he had ju st fin ish ed sneaking, and upon hearing th e shooting he dropped to the floor, th in k in g of how an u n gracious position it was. Then he began to th in k th a t it w as kids shooting off firew orks, and he stood up w hile th e firing was still going on. E llsw o rth explained to th e group th a t he realized the needs of th is a rea he said wp need m ore m oney for o u r highw ay, and we need fore access roads into the tim ber. W e need an access h ig h w ay to G ra n ts Pass. E llsw orth said. Also, he said th a t some type of harbor, and b e tte r m ail s e rv ice and facilities are needed. The congressm an explained how- in th e last session of congress the highw ay p ro g ram w as ig n o r ed by $1 billion, for a m uch e x panded program . He called for an end to coneon tratio n of pow er in W ashington, and said he “opposes enchroach- m en t into local affairs,, by th? “g reat fa th e r in W ash in g to n ".
