H (W O I.TFWAFV ► | X On the Reef By BILL P H E L P S This is som ething of a fa re well colum n. Not to C u rry C ounty we hope, but to this co rn er of the paper. And th a t will probably be a g re a t relief to m ore people th an you can possibly nam e. It w on’t to me, though. At home, I do all th e listening. And it has been a g reat deal of pleas ure to be able to use this co rn er to express m yself w ith no one around to talk back . . . until the next day. It would seem th a t th e re would be a lot of things you can say in your final colum n . . . but right now we c a n ’t think of it. And anyw ay, farew ell speaches a re alw ays a little pointless. W e’re hoping th a t w e’ll still be around tow n . . . so now w e’ll do o u r spouting v erbally instead of in w riting. We w andered into tow n from a trek into the hills T uesday, and ran into th e ju eiest sto ry w e’ve handled in y ears. Seem s a local wom an had g o tten h er th ro a t cut, and all th e roads out of tow n w ere blocked. Before we got the m u rd e r u n d er control, though, we found sh e’d really been stabbed in th e back, shot, beat to d eath , and th a t she w a s n ’t a w om an but a m an. Finally we asked th e fieople blocking th e road in search of his (or her) killer, and found they w ere th ere to ask out of s ta te to u rists for d a ta on th e ir Vacaion in Oregon. T h at broke us forever of going to th e source to get o u r news. H ere we had a nice sen satio n al m u rd er, and they went and spoiled it!
