T he s ta te ’s incom e of $1,310,- 000,000 set new’ records. P ay ro lls in th e lu m b er industry’ accounted for m ore th a n a q u a r te r of this; incom e from forest pro d u cts hit th e billion d o lla r m ark despite price declines. T he A m erican Peoples Y ear book will disclose th a t th e to ta l cut in th e s ta te last y ea r a m o u n t ed to 8,558,923 board feet an in crease from 1952, but slightly un d er th e all-tim e high of 8,610.- 000,000 board feet rep o rted for 1951. Som e fa rm e rs w ere less fo rtu n - ate, how ever. A ccording to the report, crop prices dropped about 12 p er cent below 1952’s levels in n th e yields on m ost crops w a s, term in ed “d isap pointing.” W heat Î grow ers, how ever, h arv ested a re- I cord even of m ore th a n 34 m il lion bushels and received slightly h ig h er prices th a n they did in 1952. A w et y e a r caused losses in barley, fru its, nuts, hops, and g ra ss seed b u t helped th e dairy fa rm er. G ross incom e from farm p ro d u c ts am o u n ted to $398,691,- 000, down 2 p e r cent from the p reced in g year. On th e in d u strial scene, the y earbook will re p o rt th a t despite th e slowdown in federal develop m en t of th e pow er reso u rces of th e C olum bia river, th e H arvey M achinery Co., w hich had alread y o b tained ,a pow er co m m itm en t w en t ahead w ith plans to build a 65 m illion d o llar alu m in u m re d u ctio n p lan t w hich w’ould use pow er from th e D alles D am .
