» O * O L IB ä ARY On the Reef By B IL L P H E L P S As we have said a n u m b e r of tim es in th e p ast, we o ften w ish we w ere in th e g a rb a g e b u sin ess. . . . And th e only good th in g ab o u t it is you'll p robably n ev er read this anyhow , b ecause, a t th e m om ent, w e’re not at al, su re w e’re going to get a n e w sp a p e r out. It began w hen we took a flying trip to San F ran cisco — an d o u r 194S Ford, w hich is p robably th e m ost d isre p u ta b le c a r In C u rry county co llap sed . One day late, we phoned from San F ra n c isc o — to find th a t o u r lin o ty p e o p e ra to r, on loan from th e M edford Mail T rib une, had been recalled and we d id n 't have any. W e lim ped in M onday at m id n ight, and T u esd ay , we found an o p erato r. W edn esd ay th e lin o ty p e broke down. W ell, t h a t ’s th e w ay sh e sta n d s rig h t now. As I said, if you ev er get to read this, I’ll be very s u r prised. And if you do. you'll note th e p ap er th is w eek is n ’t one of o u r best. Pv a hunch th a t w hen we get out, it will be w ith o u t a s m uch new s as we should have, and p ro b ably w ith less pages. And. in cid en tally , how do you g et' in to the g a rb a g e b u sin e ss? Som ew here else In th is p a p e r th e re should be a sto ry on an alt- boat built by Rex H ayes. W h at th e story (an d Rex) d o e sn ’t say is th a t he pulled th e o ld e st b o n er in th e w o rld - b u ilt it too big to get it out. You should ta k e a look at his g arage, w hich has an e x c e e d ing ly m u tila te d e n tra n c e . But he did get it out. And w hat do you know ! W e got th e pap er out, too!
