a rt and follows all th e a rt p rin ci­
ples as in music, p ain tin g and
scu lp tu rin g . T h ere b u s t be b a l­
ance, proportion, form, line, p a t­
tern , tex tu re, color rh y th m and
u n ity
using the living m ateria l
as a m edium w ith w hich to w ork
to at ain sim plicity, expression,
harm ony and beauty. Design is
th e s tru c tu ra l foundation of any
arran g e m e n t and is im perative.
Any black and w hite photograph
will show th e m erits and fa u lts of
th e arran g e m e n t, the w eakness
and s tre n g th of th e line p a tte rn .
P la n t m ateria l should be p ro p ­
erly conditioned for use. selected
w ith care, keeping the p ictu re you
wish to c re a te in m ind at all
times. C o n tainers should be of a
te x tu re to com plim ent the plant
m aterial. T ry to use a w ell-de­
signed co n tain er, never one too
o rn a te or grotesque.
M echanical aids such as needle
holders, ru b b er bands, tw is t’em s,
plasticene, lead strip s and m any
o th ers should be used to stab ilize
the arran g e m e n t in th* container.
T he finished a rra n g e m e n t alw ays
has these m echanical aids w ell
concealed.
S IM P L IC IT Y should be the key­
note of any a rran g e m e n t. Use
spiked flow ers o r foliage for line,
tilled in w ith o th e r round-type
flow ers keeping buds at top and
outside, using open flow ers and
d a rk e r colors a t c e n te r and a t
c o n tain e r edge. The focal point
of ail arra n g e m e n ts should be
w here all lines m w t th a t is,
w here th e v ertic al line of plant
m a te ria l and th e horizontal line of
the co n tain e r m eet. F oliage as
well as an open flow er m ay
c re a te a tran sitio n a l line, tying
the tw o to g eth er. N ever let a
flow er o r foliage rest on the edge
of th e c o n ta in e r as th iy m ust he
stan d in g by them selves. Always
finish an a rra n g e m e n t on all sides
A good flow er a rra n g e m e n t is
three-dim ensional, having height,
w idth and depth. Do not crow d
flow ers into a co n tain e r know
when to stop!

plant sale this S a tu rd a y , A pril 24.
I he sale is to be held in D im m ick’s
M ark et, w ith Mrs. Cleo R ogers
ch a irm an of th e event. All kinds
of p lan ts are being donated b>
club m em bers for the sale, which
will begin at 10 a m. and continue
until 6 p m . or until all the p lants
