D ates for th e closed season ex ten d from A pril 1 th ro u g h D ecem ber 31. If fire w e ath er conditions w a rra n t, th e governor m ay advance th e open ing d ate to F e b ru a ry 1 o r te rm in ate the closed season p rio r to D ecem ber 31st. The opening d ate of A pril 1 authorized by th e new law re places th e old act w hich e s ta b lished May 15 as th e opening day ot th e closed season unless moved up by p ro clam atio n by the gov ernor. L oggers and saw m ill o p e ra tors w ere cau tio n ed to have nil fire equipm ent in readiness as required by th e forest law s im m ediately. O fficial inspections will be m ad by field personnel be ginning on th a t d ate, fo restry o f ficials advised. T he s ta te board urged con tinued public vigilance in the woods d u rin g 1954 w hen using fire o r pow er-driven equipm ent. F ire prev en tio n is a big p art of th e forest p ro tection program , they said, and re p o rted th a t con tinued red uction of m an-caused fires would not only serve to keep O regon green but would save h u n dreds of th o u san d s of d o llars in fire fighting co sts and valuable, grow ing tim ber. T he O regon S ta te School for the D eaf will hold its sixth annual Preschool C linic for p a re n ts of young deaf and hard of hearing children on A pril 12, 13 and 14. S u p erin ten d en t M. B. C la tte rb u c k announced today. The purpose of this clinic is to assist p a re n ts in w orking w ith th e ir deaf child and to acquaint them w ith th e educational facili ties for the deaf in th e S ta te of Oregon. P a re n ts will have an o p p o rtu n i ty to observe classes from the k in d erg a rten level thro u g h high school work. V arious m em bers of the sta ff of th e O regon S ta te School for th e D eaf will discuss problem s of the deaf and h ard of hearing. P a re n ts are asked to bring th e ir deaf or hard of h earin g child w ith them , and living accom m odations will be furn ished by th e School during the clinic w ithout cost to th e parents. George M cBride, M arshfield D istrict M an ag e r to r W est C oast T elephone Com pany, announced th a t re d u c tions a re effective on bills dated April 1 and th e re a fte r. T he excise tax on all telephone service is cut from 15% and 25% to 10%. Th ? larg est tax cut will be on long distan ce calls costing 25 cen ts or m ore, now taxed to 25%.
