As he observed th e Coast line, ¡n sailing back and fo rth , it ap p eared to him th at so u th of P ort O rford w as h? w e ste rly term in u s of a high ran g e of m o u n tain ridges, e x te n d ing fa r back to th e in te r :or, so he in stru cted his m en to clim b to the sum m it of th a t m ountain, which te rm in ated in steep cliffs, at the o cean ’s edge, and to follow th e dividing ridges in an « a ste rly direction. They followed his a d vice, as fa r as going to the top of th e m ountain, but a f te r s t a r t ing in an e a s te rly direction, not being m o u n tain eers, they soon got into the canyons and becam e lost. A fte r w an d erin g around for seven days, they cam e back into P o rt O rford from th e n o rth . So disgusted w ere the men w ith th e advice given th em by C ap tain Tiehenor, th a t th ey called the m ou n tain , “T ich en o r's H um bug,” and it has been know n as “ H u m bug M ou n tain ,” ev er since and is an u n m ista k a b le lan d m ark to tra v e lle rs along th e R oosevelt highw ay. T h ere is a strea m , know n as “B rushes C reek ,” w hich m akes a sem i-circle aro u n d th e base of H um bug m o u ntain.
