But w hat about som e token of love. . . and friendship. . . and u n d erstan d in g . . . and consideration. . .and a help ing hand . . and a sm ile. . , and a p ra y e r? “You c a n ’t buy these th in g s in any store, and th e se a re th e v ery th ings people need. W e all need them . . . C h ristm a s is. . in th e h e a rts of people. “ I th a n k God for C hristm as. W ould th a t it lasted all year. F o r on C h ristm a s Eve ami C h ristm a s Day. all the w orld is a b e tte r place, and m en and w om en a rc m o re lovable. “W hen C h ristm a s doesn’t m ake y o u r h e a rt swell u.p u n til it b u rsts. . . and m ake you all soft and w a rm inside . . then you'll know th a t som ething inside of you is dead “Isn ’t it w onderful to th in k th a t nothing can really h arm th e joy ot C hristm as. . . A lthough y o u r C h ristm as tre e decorations will include m any new gadgets, such as lights w ith bubbles in them . . it’s the old tree decorations th a t n r an th e m ost. . the ones you save carefu lly from y e a r to year. . th e crooked s ta r th a t goes on the top of the tiny m anger, and the shed, and th e little figures of the Holy Fam ily. . . and lovingly a r range them on the m an tel o r in the m iddle of th e dining room table. “ And g ettin g th e tre e will be a fam ily evojit, w ith g reat e x c ite m ent for the children. And th e re will be a closet into w hich you’ll forbid your husband to look. And he will be m oving th rough the house m ysteriously w ith bundles u n d er his coat, and you'll p re tend not to notice. . . “T h ere will be the fra g ra n c e of cookies baking spices and fruit cake. . . and th e w a rm th of the Louse shall b*’ m elodious w ith th e lilting stra in s of “S ilent N ight. Holy N ight." And fo rests of fit- tree s will m arch right into out living rooms. . . T here will be holly w re ath s in o u r windows. . And we shall sw eep the Noel skies for th eir b rig h test colors and fes toon o u r hom es w .th stars. “T h ere will be a chubby sto ck ing hung by the fireplace. . . “And finally C h ristm a s m orning will come. And then you will re m em ber w hat C h ristm as m eans th e beginning of C h ristian ity . . . “In a w orld th a t seem s not only to be changing, but even to be dis solving. th e re are some tens of m illions of us who w ant C h ris t m as to be the sam e. . .w ith the sam e old g reetin g “ M erry C h ris t m as" and no other. “So we will not “spend" C h ris t m as. . . nor “observe" C hristm as. W e will "k een ” C h ristm a s keep it as it is. . . in all th e loveliness of its ancient traditions. "M ay we keep it in o u r h earts, th at w e m ay be kept in its hope."
