yesterday on his w ay to th e house
he alm ost forgot to visit.
His pack w as as big as ever,
or perhaps a litle larger, and his
g irth was ju st about th e sam e
as has b en p rev io u sly rep o rted
Put he was riding a jeep instead
of a sleigh, and in th e face he
borr a stro n g resem b lan ce to
I < puty S h eriff W es S m ith. In the
1 aekend, beside the pack he c a r­
ried, was a steelh ead rod, since
S an ta believes in com bining p leas­
ure w ith pleasure.
His destin atio n w as a borne on
the Chetco, w hich W es had d is ­
covered a few days ea rlier. In it
w ere a fam ily w ith a ten y e a r old
boy. They w ere isolated up the
riv er no w ork, no m oney, no food
and no C hristm as.
P u t th ere will be C h ristm a s,
th an k s to W es and to th e people
of this area w ho h ea rd ab o u t th e
fam ily from him. In th e jeep be­
hind him was food and clothing
and toys; enough to m ak e a
C h ristm as for any fam ily.
T here was an apple box full
of fru it and g roceries from th e
Dim m ick b ro th e rs—oran g es and
apples, coffee and m ilk and su g ar.
T here was a n o th e r box of g ro c e r­
ies—ten d ollars w o rth o rd ered by
Dr. D urden of th e C om m unity
C hurch, and filled by D im m icks’ -
and Wes says it w as th e la rg e st
ten dollars w o rth he ev e r saw ;
th ere w ere p o ta to e s and c a rro ts
from Archie McVay, and boxes of
can n ed fru it and v eg etab les and
salm on from C ed ar L ane c a n n e r­
ies, w ith toys tu ck ed in h ere and
th ere from F ay e an d R ex H ayes.
T here w ere tw o boxes from th e
C om m unity B ap tist C hurch filled
w ith groceries; th e re w ere new
shoes for th e boy d o nated an o n ­
ym ously, and clo th in g and candy
for him from th e A rre ll’s a t C h e t­
co Drug. And. finally, th e re w as
a tu rk e y from L a rry M oore, u p
the Chetco.
And aw aitin g a fu tu re trip by
Wes w ere g ro ceries from H iw ay
M arket and H a n sc a m ’s — — to
m ake su re th a t C h ristm a s d oesn’t
end too soon.
It probably happens a t o th e r
places — but now here else do
people respond so gen ero u sly and
so sw iftly as they do in B rookings.
T h e re ’ll be a real C h ristm a s in
the home on th e C hetco th a t S a n ­
ta alm ost forgot.

CLASS DISTRICT
School D istrict 17 becam e an
independent first-c la ss school dis­
tric t M onday, as v o ters approved
w ith d raw al
from
the C ounty
R u ral School D istrict by a vote
of 103 to 1.
By so doing, th e voters set into
o p eratio n a chain of ev e n ts w hich
will affect both th e local d istric t
and th e county a t large.
F irs t and forem ost, th e local
d istrict will now he adm inistered,
beginning w ith th e next school
year, e n t rely by its local school
board, which will increase to five
m em bers. T he next election will
choose th re e additional m em bers,
one to replace C h airm an H arold
C rum p, and tw o additional.
F in an cin g provisions for th e
d istric t will also change, since the
budget for th e local d istric t will
now be p re p are d by a local com ­
m itte e and approved by this d is­
tr ic t’s school board, in ste a d of
being su b m itted to th e co u n ty
school board for revision, as was
fo rm e rly done.
W ith d raw al of th e d is tric t will
also affect th e re m a in d er of th e
county, since funds from th e
B rookings d istric t will no longer
he pooled and redivided in th e
county. T h u s the co u n ty budget
m ay have to be reap p raised a P e r
th e B rookings w ith d raw al.
One o th e r effect will be to
tra n s f e r th e co unty school s u p e r­
in te n d e n t’s office from an apixnn
tive one to an elective one. An
election will be held for th a t post
at the tim e the B rookings w ith ­
d ra w al becom es effective.

The Christmas Story
