A New Opportunity for Curry County T h e ojiening of S o u th Coast M illing C om pany’s new plant here, and th e ir plans for m ass tra n s p o rta tio n of finished lum ber by barge, m ay very well be one of the tu rn in g points in the econom ic history of C u rry C ounty. W e have fought here, since th e first se ttle rs, a condition w hich has kept o u r pro d u cers alw ay s in the bight. T h a t condi tio n is o u r isolation from the m a rk e ts which need o u r m a te ria ls. T h ere has never been such a thing as a co m p etitiv e m a rk e t fo r S o u th e rn C u rry C ounty. O u r producers not only have had to m eet th e prices of o th e r regions for the p ro d u c ts we have sold. . . we have ha«l, also, to absorb th e e x tra tra n s p o rta tio n co sts n ec essita ted by o u r position. And th e pro d u cers we have had here have done m agnificently In c a rry in g on th e uphill b a ttle ag ain st tra n s p o rta tio n costs. T he fact th a t a u r p ro d u cts arc in th e m a rk e t at all testifies th a t th e y have produced su p erio r products at less a c tu a l costs th an m o re accessible regions.
