Slowdown in Plywood The one week vacation taken by the B rookings Plywood Company last week brings home a point th a t is becoming in creasingly evident in the lum ber business. The plant-w ide vaca tio n was taken as the a lte rn a tiv e to reduced production . . . a reduction necessitated by m ounting inventories and slow' sales in the lum ber m ills of the west. The vacation at Brookings was no isolated case. In p la n t n ite r plant along the coast, w o rk in g hours have been c u rta ile d because of fa ilu re to move lum ber as ra p id ly as it is produced. The slow' down in lu m b e r sales has some producers fra n k ly w orried. They see no a lte rn a tiv e ahead to decreasing production, perhaps to the |»oint w here the m a rg in a l producers are forced out of the business. And a few of them are already forecasting a depression fo r the woods lands of the west. Charles Sprague o f the Salem Statesm an a ttrib u te s the lackadaisical sales of lumt»er p rim a rily to the fa ct th a t high fixed costs o f raw' m a te ria ls and labor have forced plyw ood and o th e r m achined lu m b e r rig h t out of the m arket. W ith sky high prices being m aintained fo r stumpage, and increasing wages being paid the lum ber w orkers, he blames the dearth o f sales to the plain in a b ility o f the average man to pay fo r the lu m b e r he needs . . . ano therefore he does w ith o u t. W e’re not prepared to agree w ith M r. Sprague th a t the price of lum ber is out er jo in t w ith the pr ce of other necessities. We ll agree we can’t a ffo rd to build rig h t now. hut th a t’s ju st one of a large num ber o f things we can’t afford a ll of them necessities. We w o u ld n ’t q u ite know how to act if wc fe lt we could afford to buy some lum ber. R ather, we th in k the lag in lum ber sales can be a ttrib u te d to the dislocation of an economy in w hich no one knows w hat w ill happen o r w hat did happen, as fa r as that goes. Lum ber is a p rim a ry product, the great basic product in our basic in d u stry, construction. W ith a truce in Korea w hich no o n e q u ite trusts, and w ith o u r N a tional Governm ent unable to m ake perm anent plans because of the tenous q u a lity o f that peace, we th in k i t ’s n a tu ra l fo r the N a tio n ’s b u ild rts to p u ll in th e ir belts and look sideways a couple of tim es before em barking on any new building program s. Such a condition can not. and w ill not last long. The tra n sitio n from w a r tim e to peacetim e economy is going to throw heavy emphasis on new construction at horn«’.
