Prejudiced as I am relative to radio and television as media of en tertainm ent, I m ust adm it th eir forces for clean politics. \\ hile the press has always done an excellent job of inform ing the people as to what goes on in 'smoke-filled rooms” at political conventions. H there can be no denying that for the interested | | citizen to see and hear what actually goes on car ries a much more impressive wallop. In addition to m aking for a more informed pub lic, the kiowledge th at their actions are under nation wide scrutiny m ust naturally discourage political double-dealing behind the scenes . Refusal of T aft forces at the Republican convention to admit radio or television to the national com m ittee sessions dealing with contested delegates v as evidence of the fear of these media when x lirty work at the cross-roads” is on the program. The fact that listeners were allowed to observe proceedings during the subsequent meetings of the credentials com m ittee was undoubetedly the factor which brought anout the m inority report which was overwhelmingly adoped by the convention when brought on the floor. Throwing open the proceedings of the m eetings to the public forc ed the voting delegates to chose between loyalty to party bosses and responsibility to those they represented. Under such circumstances, there was only one decision which could be made. The public when in possession of the facts is always the boss. W ithout doubt th ere are many in Congress who look forward with some dism ay to the tim e when their legislative proceedings also will be made available to th eir constituents via the air. He ean see the handw riting on the wall. His days of playing “hookey” from sessions will be definitely at an end and success in his future election cam paigns will be bast'd on w hat actually was seen to do and not on what he says he did.
