The normal tendency of most of us is to place the blame on the other fellow forgetting that we are the other fellow to someone else and that our actions and thinking when pooled constitute * the actions and thinking of the world. The ever current difficulty of getting people to contribute of tim e and energy to civic e n te r prises is typical of an American weakness which we are quick to criticize but slow to adm it as our own failing. There has never been any difficulty in getting citizens to volunteer services which call lor m arching at the head of the parade; the scarcity occurs when the call comes for someone to help fill the ranks. Probably much of this attitu d e stem s from the fact that publicity and credit always go to the one who m akes the touchdown or who is elected to the head position of an organization. We seldom hear of the fellow who opens the hole for the backfield runner or the one who serves faithfully on the cleanup committee. All of which brings us back to our original point. Not enough are interested in giving of service that doesn't bring credit or headlines. It is much too easy to excuse ourselves by assuming that someone else will do it anyway. Thus a trem endously unfair burden of re- ponsibility is placed on the few who are imbued with the spirit of giving. This m ight be the appropriate tim e for all of us to check our activities in order to determ ine how m a rv are devoted to our own selfish ends. It is never too late.
