O. P. and have a chance to win. Ik e has th a t appeal, as m ay b e a t t e s t e d by the p rim ary votes of th e m any s ta te s in recent m onths. T h e E isenhow er forces did not win as easily as m ay have sounder! o v er the radio. T h ere w ere th re e days of d e b a te over seatin g dele g a te s from G eorgia, L ouisiana and T exas. In these d eb a te s an b a l lo tin g the E isenhow er forces gained in s tre n g th for it w as first re p o rte d these s ta te s w ere for T a ft. G en eral D ouglas M ac A rth u r and H e rb ert H oover tried to sw’ay, by inference, th e th in k in g to w ard T a f t’s candidacy, but th e delegates had nothing to do w ith th ese speeches, for they knew th e p o p u lar apiw al of th e ir co n stitu e n ts at home, and w hat they m ust do in o rd e r to give th e R epublicans a chance in the 1952 election. D ra m atic w as th e nom ination sjieech for G eneral E isenhow er, m ade by th e R epublican governor of D em o cratic M aryland, w ho claim ed th a t only " Ik e ’ could dip into th e D em o cratic S outh to get any votes. T h ey also told of the hu n d red s of th o u san d s of independent v o ters w ho would be likely to push Ik e's election. Then, he also sta te d , th o u san d s of ex-soldiers of W orld W ar 2 would flock to th e sup p o rt c f th e m an whom they knew had th e s ta te sm a n sh ip to u n ite a divided E u ro p e in 1944, and sta g e th e g re a te s t m ilita ry victory of h istory. " Ik e ,” he also em phasized, "w as unspoiled by jxditics, and Since he had not sought th e nom ination, w as not pledged.” E isenhow er, w ithout question, seem s to be th e first leadership to be put up by th e R epublicans in th e past q u a r te r ce n tu ry . At any r a te he is the only sta n d a rd b e a re r th a t will have a chance to win. It m ust be rem em bered th a t in th e past tw en ty years, th e D em o c ra tic p a rty has laid its ground-w ork well, has a m achine th a t will not be easy to unseat. It is th e d u ty of th e R epublicans, and now w ith Ike, to m ake the change com plete, or forever forget th e nam e of the R epublican p a rty as one of pow er in this country. Also ap p ealing to th e independ ent and yo u n g er v o ters is Nixon, vice p resid en tial can d id ate, who, at 39, is th e youngest ev er to com p ete for th is high office. Nixon, it m ust be rem em bered, m ade a nam e for him self in th e A lger Hjps case, and is a definite foe of th e people w ith R ussian leanings. The eyes of the w orld now are focused on th e sa m e co n ven tio n hall to see w h a t the D em ocrats w ill com e up w ith as candidate.
