Stop This 'Home-Front' Slaughter Elsewhere in this issue, under the "B y lin e ” of C liffo rd Rowe, jo u r nalism professor at Pacific U n iv e rs ity , Forest Grove, appears a mes sage of "good sense” w hich is not lik e ly to be heeded this com ing week-end by m any people. The num ber of tra ffic deaths may reach m ore than 500 it the predictors are anyw here accurate this year. Newspap<*is and magazines lam ent how m any casualties have resulted from the Korean W ar, and from W orld W a r 2, but not one paragraph is devoted to the k illin g w hich goes on rig h t at home, and no one is fig h tin g anyone els«* p a rtic u la rly . The P ilo t does not have the figures im m ediately available to prove th a t each year, at home, m ind you, the old autom obile is the w o rld ’s greatest k ille r claim ing m ore casualties than disease and war. W hat w ill the people of this area, this state, and section do? The P ilot does not like the job of publishing obituaries w hich come fro m accidents, and especially highw ay accidents w hich take not only the u n fo rtu n a te ones, but leaves an a fte rm a th in one o r more homes. Please, fo r y o u r own sake, be careful this J u ly F o u rth ! Let the news be in next issue that of y o u r v is itin g relatives, not obituaries. Just PERSONAL 7 ? £ out to field these clubs and real money, too! ‘ Zf in nice to boast a w in n in g baseball team, but when it begins to cost lik e a I) league, then some one in try in g to fool someone. It w ill be my guess th a t these o th e r founts may tire of this expendi tures. and next year, the old home, team w ill again eome into its ouyn. • * • How m any o f the P ilot readers w ill be involved in some sort of traffic accident over the long J u ly F o u rth W eek-end? Associated and U nited Press broadcasts are pre d ic tin g how many Am ericans w ill lx* slaughtered between now and next Monday. It is amazing the gig a n tic figure w hich h a s b«x*n made by both, and how closely the tw o d iffe re n t news agencies are on the total. W hy can't people, behind the hood of a p o w e rfu l car, slow to \a decent pace, le t people pass if they wish, and not tr y to break speed records on the highw ays? ' W ill not people use a lit t le com mon sense w hile d riv in g ? W hy do i no many wish to pass on a curve I when they can't see fa r ahead? Y outh and tru c k drive rs have been accused of being the w orst offenders. To th is I wish to o ffe r a protest, and disagree. In w hat d riv in g I do, whicTi w ould not w ear out a car in a year, I have noted th a t alm ost w ith o u t excep tion, tru c k d rive rs are about the most courteous, and considerate on the road. I have been motion«'«! to pass, when the tru c k has been approaching a curve or top of a h ill. Elsewhere in this issue te lls of a tru c k d riv e r who alm ost k ille d him self, and w recked his tru c k a ll because tw o cars trie d to pass him am i he trie d to keep fro m h ittin g a th ird . Youth may be daring, but I have noticed th a t youth have q u icke r and b e tte r reflexes, and make fe w e r d riv in g m istakes than many elders. I 'l l a d m it some of the youth are reckless, but also, some adults are reckless. • • • Mrs. Helen M yers and children of Madras, who had been v is itin g her brother, Leo Lucas, and o th e r relatives, have le ft fo r M adras.
