Thursday, June 19, 1952 BROOKINGS-HARBOR PILOT, BROOKINGS, OREGON PAGE T H R E E For What It's W orth. By C lifford P. R owf So far as I was awair, I had never known or seen a com m unist; neither had I ever been tem pted by any of their propaganda. As a esult I had come to be som ew hat asham ed of my- elf, for a fter all if one isn’t even w orth a com- lunist working on him, then he m ust be p retty jw grade. Such was my fram e of mind until just recently vhen direct from the U. S. S. R embassy in W ash- mgton, D. C., I received a beautifully illustrated [magazine giving me the low-down on things be- tind the iron curtain. Since they won t let any- l»ne see for himselt how tilin g s a r e 0VM* t h e r e , ' I I hought it was ra th e r decent of them to take all | hat trouble just for me, especially when it was ent absolutely free. A fter I had finished reading the m agazine (in a dark corner of my cellar at m idnight by candlelight) I found that they had succeeded in convincing me th at they undoubtedly were big gest liars on God’s green earth and th at the m agazine was truly vCorth every cent they charged me. The stories and the words were beautiful. Everybody in Russia was employed and happy. But where the editor m ade his m istake was in using pictures. If those people were happy then they must have been m om entarily depressed by the sight of a cam era because I never saw a more m iserable, dejected and beaten look on the face of hum an beings than that displayed by the happy Russians. The pride and joy in living, seen only on the countenances of free men, were missing entirely. Sure I will go along w ith the editor when he says th at everyone is employed in Russia. W hat does th at prove? So is everyone em ployed in A lcatraz and Sing Sing; but I doubt very much if this is cause for happiness. No I am afraid th at Joe is w asting his com rade’s rubles when he sends such tripe to me or to any oth er Am erican citizen who has som ething other than saw dust for brains. I am not going to sub scribe for the magazine even though they very kindly offered to send it in plain wrapper.
