It s M ay Day. W h at does May
Day rem ind you o f? W ell, I guess
oerhaps it depends upon how old
you are. To me, May D ay m eans
May B askets.
R em em ber how
we used to w ork for a w eek or so
liefore May Day, fashioning little
b a sk e ts? Shoe boxes w ere my
favorite. T hey could be left in
th e ir oblong o riginal shape, o r cut
down and m ade in to tw o sq u are
little baskets. L eft-over crepe p a
p e r from C h ristm a s and V alentine
day w as ruffled and ca re fu lly put
on. R em em ber th e gobs of home
m ade flour paste we slopped on
the floor and over th e ta b le ? Left
¡over rolls of b rig h tly flowered and
u n a te w a llp a p e r cam e in handy
too. Then the afternoon before
May Day, we w ould go w ild-flow
er h u n tin g and end by p ractically
scalp.ng M am a s flower garden.
I hen dusk, and the excitem ent
of loading up w ith our gay little
irskets. full of fra g ra n t “S pring

chnny Jum p-U ps. and C abbage
loses. R em em ber the th rill of
caving them , one by one on the
lo o rstep of o u r favorite fr ends?
It call how w e’d knock on the

the nearest sh ru b ? Being an o n y

C hildren have forg o tten or per.

let May Day go into th e limbo
of a discarded w ay of life?
