I am referring to the more than a million young men who daily are offering their lives to a country whose peo ple refuse them a voice in their government. 1 am plead ing the case for the more than one million young men in our armed forces who have not reached the age of twenty-one and so are deprived of the right to vote. To be taxed without representation is certainly a le gitimate basis for vigorous complaint; to be asked to offer up one’s life without representation makes the former complaint seem petty by comparison. To argue that one is old enough to fight in protection of one’s country but t(X) young to vote for those who will govern that coun- try is to talk the language of fools. I his government of» the people, by the people, and for the people should in sist that when a youth is called into military service to protect his nation’s ideals, he should be granted auto matically the privilege of adding his voice to those who determine the ideals.
