GROWTH NOTED IN FIVE YEARS 1 nave completed nve con- 1 rinuous years of publication— n\C years which have seen this community rise from practical obscurity to promi- enee to a modern city although still un incorporated. ( hanges have been too many to enumerate in this column in less than a dozen issues. In this growth the Pilot has noted stability, continued and positive growth which gives the resident a feeling of confidence ami securiu in the future. Greatest item of growth in the cominunitv, the Pilot finds, is the erow th of nivmlk rizón. By Dewey Am intrigued by announce ment of formation of 4-H elec tric clubs, by Miss Dorothy New ton, HDA, who wishes to see a number of this type of clubs at work shortly. Would like, very much to see this area represent ed by at least one club soon. As Miss Newton stated, real trag edy might be averted by knowl edge of the basic electrical prin ciples. There are a number of qualified instructors in this area who would enjoy doing this job at not too great a demand on their time. 4-H Clubs do great work, all by public spirited citizens who gain not one cent for their time and labor. These clubs have been instrumental, right in Curry County, of developing many out standing citizens whose fame is nation-wide. Over-emphasis for k-H club work t« impossible. The extent of the success rests upon the leaders of the county. In the past it seems that this work has been extraordinary. Did you note, in another 4-H story in this issue, that eight clubs are functioning in this im mediate area. These clubs are doing great work with the boys and girls, who should be given more opportunities to widen the scope of training. Busy young sters are happy youngsters, and later become useful men and women. I'd like very much to see what the range of training could be extended to in this area. Not being primarily a dairy section, there's no great call for club in that line, any more than say one of two. to accommodate the of the community. It - geography } would be fooling to attempt clubs where there i.s no particular lo cal interest. KCRE, radio station of the Del Norte B roa dc astin g Co., ready to go on to the air in December, is still awaiting okay from Feder- al Communicat 10ns Commission. Bob Gray, manager, almost tit to be sent to one of those places where they treat people for nervous breakdowns. Bob is not the most pleasant person in the world today. Govt rmt nt regulations a n d red tape are something to rec kon uith. Once I sent for appli cation forms with idea of incor- porat ¡n g a ludio station. Whilt that was sonu years ago, then I found that the application had to be made out in at least sex- tette, and all the information in addition discouraged me immed iately. Suddenly lost interest in starting a station. Know just about what Bob Gray is endur ing at présent. There was once a time when life was simple, when a person could plan a business or life in his own peculiar way. Today is a different age. Today, there are government restrictions to too many business, where the busi ness must become a part of the i bureaucracy which seems to be our federal government. Attempt has often been made to muffle the free press of America. Free press has been an insti tution as long as America has been a Ration. The press, pe- cularily but truly, has remained mostly untainted. so that the I public may be assured pretty ac- 1 curate coverage of news. Per-| haps certain papers color news politically a bit, but in the main newspaper \accounts are accurate to the word. Radio stations, how ever, come under a gag rule and many more regulations than do newspapers. LOCAL NEWS Wilson Freeman and Clifford Beems returned late last week1 from Portland, where Mr. Free man purchased the regrigeration equipment for his new store, now under construction. Mrs. Don Carson, who has been staying with her mother, Mrs. Barnes, at Smith River after her release from Seaside hospital, re- turned to her home here Tues- day. Mrs. Ed F. Ackley, who had been in the Bay area for several weeks on board of health busi ness, returned last week. Mr. Ackley had driven south for her.
