B rookings -H arbor Pilot, B rookings , O regon T hursday , J anuary it , = Mrs. Bernadine Steele re ported on her return from Coos Bay the first of the week that her 11-year-old niece, Jerry Lee Cagley, is now out of danger and was allowed to sit up Mon day. She was stricken with spinal meningitis while visiting her mother, Mrs. Berniece Cagley, during the holidays, and was given an even chance to survive for about three days. Her father, E. H. Cagley and her older sis ter, Patsy, came from their home at Denver, as did her aunt, Mrs. Bertha Beers of Gallup, New Mexico, it is not known how soon she will be able to return here to re-enter school. Roy Marquis enjoyed an over night visit from his cousins, Clif ford Higgins of Burlingame, Cal., and Orland Higgins of Phoenix, Ariz., last week. They brought him news that their father had died in Santa Rosa recently. Mr, and Mrs. Tom Piccinili ar- rived home from a month’s vis’t at Dallas, Texas, where they had been called by the illness of Mrs. Piccinili’s father, who is 95 years old, but who is now better. Mrs. N 'Ilie Rodehaver is home after spending several weeks at Berkeley where she visited her daughter and family and under went medical attention. Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Wollam sjM*nt the two weeks over the holidays with their son and fam ily, Walter Jr., at Alhambra. The Wollams rejKirt seeing the Rose Bowl game by television, and were enthusiastic over their first experience. Mrs. Rose Poole and Mrs. Ruth Bathiany, accompanied by Mrs. Poole’s daughter, Mrs. Eleanor Stoner and a friend, Mrs. Ellen Clark of Klamath Falls, returned home last week after enjoying the holidays with relatives at Klamath Falls and 'rulelake. Anyone interest in takikng the examination should be there at least an hour before the closing time. Mr. and Mrs. L. J. Knee and two children spent the holidajs i n Southern California visiting relatives and transacting busi ness, returning home last Wed nesday. Mrs. Jessie Judkins returned home last week after spending two weeks visiting friends at Portland. Miss Ruth Newton of Portland spent a week here visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. H. New ton, over Newr Years. Louie Stoller is at the Veter- ins’ Hospital, Portland, and it is reported he will undergo an op eration this week. He has been in poor health for some time. Mr. and Mrs. Victor Anderson Jr. and Mrs. Anderson's sistier, Miss Helen McCormick, of Al- hany were guests at the Victor Anderson home over New Years. Mr. and Mrs. Bob Chambers returned home Sunda after en- joying two weeks visit over the holidays at Portland with their son, Dean, and family. Mr. and Mrs. Donald Payne and three children ret urned home the latter part of the week from a two-week’s trip to San Diego where they visited Mrs. Payne's family. Larry Wright, Don Mer ritt and Ray Reekmhn, local young men who are in naval training there, spent part of the holidays with them, as did Bob Reekman, who was over from his air force base in Arizona to spend the holidays in San Diego. W. W. Smith returned last Friday from a month's trip into Washington and California where he visited his children and their families over the holidays. Mr. ind Mrs. Wm. Tollman returned from Santa Rosa last week after being called there by the serious illness of Mr. Tol man's mother, Mrs. Frances Tol man. They report she is much improved now but must remain in bed for three months. Aunt Sue Benham was remem bered on her 87th birthday Mon day a shower of birthday ca’ds from her many friends. Leslie Woodriff of Fairyland Lily and Begonia Gardens, spoke to the North Bend Garden Club I Wednesday. ” ’ topic: “Lilics and Begonias.” Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Moore, cook and assistant at White Rock dining room, are taking a much- needed rest for two months while the dining room is closed. Friends are gathering at the w. Hoagland home Friday nights for special prayer service. All are invited. Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Chisman, Mrs. David Crocket and Mr. and Mis. Eddie Freeman were din- ner guests New Years, of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Crocket. Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Wood riff have returned from a holiday trip to Washington. Lilies at the Hendry Green house are about to set buds, for Easter blooming, March 25. This usually takes six weeks. With in creased or decreased heat, the growth can be controlled. Potted roses and hyacinths are especially beautiful just now. The basement for the new ad dition to Chetco Store is going ahead as rapidly as weather will permit. Ted and Eddie Freeman are doing the excavating. Mr. and Mrs. Otto Turley, who had been in the Berkeley area for two weeks, returned home last week. They had spent the holidays with their son and daughter-in-law. Bert DeMoss, as soon as Golds Shoe Store moves to the Vincent building, will occupy the REA building with his parts store, it was announced late last week. Mauritz Van Zantes, a well- W. II.
