Stop Over In Area
Tn the last 'few days. Beaver
State Lodge, owned by Mr. and
Mrs. August DePhillips, has been
visited by several noted people
of California reports Mr. De
Phillips.
Mr. and Mrs. A. S. Pope of
Burbank, well-known fishermen,
make the trip all along the best
fishing spots on the Oregon coast.
Mrs. Pope is no mean angler in
her own right, having taken a
number of prizes at various der
bies. Mr. Pope is a former well-
known auto racer.
J. J. MacDonald, sound effects
man for Walt Disney, who puts
the squeak into Mickey Mouse’s
chatter ,and the quack into the
old Donald Duck’s prattle, was
another visitor with his wife.
The two took in the fishing, be
ing lucky to land a couple of
hefty Chinooks. They had to leave
right in the middle of his luck to
return to the studio to put the
sound in the forthcoming ‘ Alice
in Wonderland.”
Other prominent visitors m
eluded Mr. and Mrs. F. C. StoPe
ot Stolte Inc., Oakland. This con
cern has construction projects
in several states. They enjoyed
this area immensely.
Remember the carnival, Nov.
10. for benefit of the library.

SMITH RIVER
One of the worst wind and
rain storms of recent years hit
this area over the week-end,
and according to old-time resi
dents, nothing like it had hap
pened in 25 years. Telephone and
power lines were wrecked. All
streams were flooded, overflow
ing the highway so travel from
Smith River to Crecent City was
impossible.
Smith River overflowed at the
Clarence Westbrook ranch, also
flooded the road at the former
Rooney home, now occupied by
Mr. and Mrs. Martin, who left
by boat when the river came
up to the top steps. They stayed
at the Lester Ulrich home.
At Tryon corner four to gve
Zeet of water covered the high
way, washing out all fences and
strewing drift wood into the barn
and barnyard at the Tryon ranch
with Mr. Tryon having to go
from the barn to tin* house m
a rowboat. Driftwood covers so
m; ny of the pastures along the
river, and logs dot the land-
scape in many places.

Mrs. A. C. Martin, mother of
Mrs. Wm. Fisher, passed away
Oct. 30 at the home of her daugh
ter who resides north of Smith
River, following a long illness.
The body will be shipped by the
Wier Mortuary to Glendale for
interment.
Smith River union school was
unable to open Monday until the
water pipes were repaired as
high water from Dominick Creek
washed them out, cutting the
supply to town.
Mrs. Harry Brown is taking
several weeks vacation. She left
by bus Friday, going north to
Washington to visit her son and
family, Mr. and Mrs. Keith
Brown and little son. She will j
also visit other relatives.
