THURSDAY, OCTOBER 5. 1950 S. P. Moves Goods To Set New Record BROOKINGS-HARBOR PILOT. BROOKINGS, OREGON vision out of Portland, the rail vice-president said, where as less than 50,000 loaded cars were hauled into the territory.. Because of the great disparity between Oregon’s loaded inbound and outbound traffic, Mr. Hale pointed out, Southern Pacific has brought close to 100.000 empty freight cars into the Portland di- visiion in 1950 in order to give Oregon shippers their full share of available equipment. Forest products, forming the great bulk of Oregon’s outbound shipments, have accounted for 78 per cent of all freight move ments on the Southern rails from this state, it was revealed. Rec- ords for the first eight months of 1950 how that the company hauled 118,175 carloads of lum ber and other products of for estry from Oregon mills more than ever before in any com parable period. PORTLAND — In spite of a country-wide shortage of heavy freight cars—the most severe in many years — Southern Pacific has established an all-time high in the first eight months of 1950 for movement of freight ship ments to and from Oregon. This fact, eminently indicative of Oregon’s spectacular growth and expanding economy, was re vealed here last week by W. W. Hale, vice-president in charge of the railroad’s system freight traffic. Mr. Hale is here with J. W. Corbett, vice-president in charge of operations for South ern Pacific, to give personal at tention to transportation prob lems in Oregon. Up to September 1, the tre mendous total of 150,915 loaded Next month this area will be cars had been shipped from Ore adv gon points on the railroad’s di- entertained by a carnival.
