The main purpose of this letter is to call special attention to the possibility of dis continuance of the position of Public Health Nurse. While there' exists no desire for its discontinuance on the part of any county official, it is true that the County Judge and members of the bud get committee are confronted by the problem of financing the op erations of the legally required department of the county plus the continuance of the opetic nal services such as those of public health, and of doing so with funds available under the six per cent limitation. A budget in excess of the six per cent limitation can be adopted only by favorable vote of the people in a special election ('ailed for that particular purpose. The customary public hearing on the county budget will be held on Eriday, June 9. Judge Forsyth has indicated that he and mem- hers of the budget committee really want to hear from the public both in advance of this session and also in connection with it. Here are come of the important reasons why you as a citizen should write, telephone or speak to the County Judge and other members of the Budget Committee in favor of continuing the prpresent financial support lor county health services: FIRST: The County Health Nurse, serving under the supervi sion o! the Counts Health Oflfctr and the State Board of Health Division of Nursing is the only person in Curry County who con stantly works at the job of pieventing the further spread of con tagious diseases. This includes a great deal of personal counseling on problems of health in the homes and family life. Skillful co-op eration with public school administrators and teachers constitutes a valuable feature of health education among the children of Curry County. Arranging for medical examinations of Food Han dlers is another significant service. SECOND: Another urgent reason why the position of Public Health Nurse must be continued is that without a Public Health Nurse the people of CuTry County cannot have a chest X-ray sur vey tor the purpose of finding unknown cases of tuberculosis. This policy of the State Board of Health is based upon the fact that unless suspicious cases cannot be followed up at once by the • Public Health Nurse and insiruettd by her on how to take care I of themselves, how to protect members of the family and other associates, and how to secure complete diagnosis and medical care j by a physician and hospitalnation when necessary the tubercular person might just as well remain unknown for he or she, without adequate controls, will continue to spread the disease. THIRD: The next reason might well be put in terms of a ques tion: “Would it not be a ver} dangerous method of money saving to eliminate the only public health services now available to parents of Curry County through which to to protect themselves and their families against the spread of tuberculosis and other communica-J ble aiseases?” In view of these challenging facts the Curry County Tuberculo sis and Health Association Ino issued this open letter in the hope that it will stimulate much personal thought and public discussion and perchance start a general movemene in vigorous support of the budget committees chort to work out a plan ot financing which will make it possible to continue the position of Public Health Nurse. These re marks, made unthinkingly, are actually disgusting. Take for in stance: “What happened to that $700 the school board cannot ac count for?” “None of them can be trusted.” The books of the school dis trict are audited yearly by i state auditor. This state Auditor complimented the local board on its method and manner of trans fer of funds one, to another, and scolded Gold Beach district for its indiscriminate transfer with out legally transferring account funds. ♦ ♦ * The All-Year’s Event Associa tion wishes to thank all those in the community who did yeoman duty toward making the Azalea Festival the success it was. The group especially wish to thank Berger, Cummins and McDonald sawmill for the trimmed slabs furnished for construction of the cabin on the stage. To list everyone who deserves thanks would be almost like a roster of the town, but the as sociation wishes everyone to be aware that their efforts were ap preciated fully. ♦ • • employment of one sort or an other: some on the construction of the power line, others to work in the logging operations of the area. Gold Beach, likewise, is reported to be over-run with new people, they to be identi-, tied with logging operations. Curry county has suddenly, if we say it that way, been rec ognized by the outside world in a way that it may not be more than another year until even all us residents may be astonished. Property seems to be moving in ( a manner that makes the lily । boom seem, small. The people1 who no seek property seem to have more money to invest. Addition of the 69KV line of electric energy will have its ef fect, and do not let it fool you for a moment. Businesses have been discouraged from coming here mainly for lack of power. With sawmilling at its peak, it is not unlikely to see re-manu facturing plants seeking location for some business. It puzzles me why someone] has not recognized the potential] profit in the using of the naftre woods of the area, such as tan I oak, madrone, and alder in the\ manufacture of furniture. Sure ly the manufacture of tan oak' flooring would be a gold mine. ' Homer Kessler, to my knowledge has tried to interest capital in this project, but with little suc cess, mostly due to power lack.1 Curry county is growing and will continue to grow, in spite of itself..
