SEEMS TO ME I become more astounded each »ar after seeing I h e Azalea estival, to comprehend its ac- lal importance to this area, of ie festival’s wide-spread appeal i not only people of Oregon, it to people of other states Pennsylvania. far away Unday, I tried to stand on the delines, listen and feel the re stions of the people I saw in be barbecue line, at the flower [splay and art exhibit, and at her functions of the festival. \ Justice to the occasion might > easy for a poet such as James r. Riley, or Edgar A. Guest, • a reporter doing a Job. it is )t just the easiest task. How- ?cr, I did acquire and feel the factions of the visitors, and I wsf assure you that it was all wd very good. Azalea Festivals have a state p-in which this community can- M ignore. Since Azalea State |rk is state-owned, it gets con-; nerable state publicity and ad-' [rtising. State traxel folders in-1 Iide information about it, and ese folders have some three id a halt million circulation. u<t immediatelx si ms what it gets waj of Ivertising without e n the king and it's worth while. J especially liked the patron e (if Ghat is the word for it) $2.50 $3.00 given the f louder display and art exhibit. The guest book is filled with names, with a surprising percentage from, out of state. A list of some of the visitors from far away has been prom ised me for publication. The Queen’s banquet also is fast becoming a tradition. At this occasion it usally is reviewed what this floral area means to travelers on Highway 101. From the mouths of people from Port land. Salem, and other places, the state points with pride to Azalea Park as one of the states real "show places.” Another feature of the festi vals I like is the joint religious service at the park, if weather permits Certainly the setting is almost perfect for this type of observance. Where, in the en- fire world, could a more beau- tiful spot be found for outdoor worship? I could not tell you. Visitors at the festival» this remarked that it was in- deed gratifying to see a commun ity which had such apparent art appreciation. This appreciation certainly will not diminish, If I am sure of human nature. “How do you people in this area (lo all these things feed the throngs, entertain everyone without one cent of charge fo guests?” was the question from no less than a dozen people to whom I talked Sunday. My re ply was, " Th rough a lot of co operation. We have something to show1 in this area, and we are proud of our community. Wc do leant visitors fo return, many times.” It is with no little amount of regret that this week 1 must an nounce that I will no longer be associated w i t h the "Oregon Coast." since I cannot do it any justice from my position here.
