HAGE EIGHT Paid Political Adv. The World's Best Climate FOR DISTRICT ATTORNEY (Vote, On Friday, May 19 Ed. F. Ackley, of Curry County 19 ail Pelicans Edged In Practice Tilt, Sun. Crescent City Merchants, with four previous pre-season games under their respective belts, had difficulty in making it five in a low, Sunday, by edging the Pel icans 3 to 1 on the local field. The game, first nine-inning t st for the Pels, was a mid-sea- son pitchers’ battle practically all the way with Bob Astin al- lowing three hits in his 7-inning stint, and George Yemor for the Merchants giving up only four hits, at least two of which were scratchy. Astin’s wildness con- tributed to his loss although a tighter defense on the part of lus mates and a hit in the clutch probably would have i eturned him a winner. The Merchants scored an un- Earned run in the first on two walks and two Pel errors. The second run, also unearned, came in the sixth on a walk and steal bv Knight, who then scored as Bunky Peterson was safe, Hank Westbrook failing to hold Jim Barrett’s high throw. Astin weakened visibly in the seventh and the Merchants lied their final run on a combi- nation of a walk, a single, two hit batsmen and a wild pitch. Hank Westbrook, down from OSC for the week-end, worked the eighth and ninth for Brookings, only six batters facing him and three of these going dogn on st l ikes. Left-hander Yemor goose-egged ♦ he Pells in all but the eighth, a disputed error depriving him of a shut-out. After one out Mat- son singled, and advanced on Spangler’s infield out. Rich Pet erson’s wide throw’ of Jim Bar rett’s ground ball then pulled Van Lent off first and base urn- pire ruled Barrett safe. This be gan a squabble, the Merchants claiming VanLent beat Barrett to the bag. Matson, meanwhile, scored unmolested all the way from second. Leo Spngler came up with the fielding gem of the day in the ninth by going far to his left and taking VanLent’s ground ball, labelled a hit, and throwing to Astin on first for the out. Next Sunday the two teams will meet at Crescent City, the final practice game before the Pels go to Myrtle Point on Sun- day, May 14.
