Lyle F. He j stated that the subcommittees on. agricultural appropriations i n both house and senate expressed the hope that the forest service would continue the experiment. At areas operated by conces sionnaires, rates will be the same as those charged by the forest service. Concessionnaires will pay the United States a small tee based on tot a income from the area. But what Senator McCarthy has shown pretty well document- ed is that certain people who either are now, or have recently been, in high places in our state department, have been closely identified with communist-mind ed people and groups. Such as sociation is not a crime. Such association does, however, ren der those people undesirable em ployes of our state department. No one, I am sure, will deny that communism is a threat to all free people. The woild con trol of communism, the Russian government, is our enemy in the thing we call a cold war. We cannot, and should not, employ communist sympathizers in any department of our government least of all the state department. We should not employ people about whom there is a reasonable basis of suspicion. 1 think that is what Senator McCarthy is driving at, but he has trod on some important toes. Those files puprred’y give the persons in question a clean bill of health. If so, what harm in seeing them If so, why not open them up and clean up this whole mess? There is something wrong in some place. I hope Senator Mc Carthy will keep on until he is either discredited by clear cut facts or forces the adnunisU • - tion to clear the names of many people McCarthy has listed by showing the committee the files. The pro-administration news writers and commentators have ignored the fact that tne Pres ident’s action leaves manx peo ple "smeared” when the commit tee should publicly cleje after inspection of the files Perhaps Senator McCarthy er- red in listing any names, but the president makes the greater er- ror by leaving them smear d in- stead of clearing them if the files can clear them.
