BROOKINGS-HARBOR PILOT, BROOKINGS, OREGON THURSDAY, JANUARY 12, 1950 Many Attend Rural Board Meet GOLD BEACH—Many taxpay ers from all parts of the county attended the public hearing of the Curry County Rural School Board, held at the court house. The 1950-51 school budget was taken up for discussion. The cost of maintaining the schools of the county has become increasingly large as years pass. In a report of the state de* partment of education the aver age per-capita cost per pupil in Curry County was $288.41. The school tax in the county increas ed about a third in the past year. All costs in the operations of schools have greatly increased with the largest amount going to teachers salaries. R. M. Knox, county agent, stated that ap proximately 50% of the taxes paid in the county were collect ed from agricultural interests. The value of their products have not anywhere near increased in proportion to their tax burden. In answering citizens directed • to Curry County Rural School I Board, Chairman Charles W. | Brooks, of Langlois, stressed that 1he most important duty of the taxpayer was to attend the budget meeting in their individ ual district and acquaint them selves with the various problems which have to be met by the budget committee. With teach ers salaries going higher it looks like more and more consolidation will have to be made.
