BROOKINGS-HARBOR PILOT, BROOKINGS, OREGON
B. Brooks of Eugene, who were
on their way to San Francisco.
Members of the senior class of
Brookings high school report an
enjoyable time on their “sneak
day’’ trip last week-end. They
left early Friday morning and
made Santa Rosa their headquar-
ters, spending Saturday at San
Francisco shopping and taking in
the attractions of that city. Mrs.
Mildred Byrne and Arthur Guth-
rie were chaperones.
Mrs. Bertha Ipson of Crescent
City and her infant daughter,
Shirley Esther, are spending sev-;
eral days at the home of Mrs. |
Ipson’s sister and brother-in-law,
Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Wood riff. Mrs.
Woodriff is caring for Mi's. Ipson
until she regains her health.
Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Carson are
enjoying a week’s visit at Sa a
Francisco with their son and
daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mi's.
Donald Carson.
N. V. Stromen of Rogue River
is in this area looking after his
business interests. He is associ
ated with A. K. Hastings in ex
tensive bulb plantings.
Ed F. Ackley was at Eurkea
Tuesday apeparing beofrt the Cal
ifornia Highway commission on a
permit to move overweight ma
chinery across California high
ways. He pointed out that many
trucks were operating across the
stale line without an ICC permit.
Mr. and Mrs. S. A. Webb left
the latter part of the week for
their honv? at Millerton. Penn.,
by way of southern California.
They hope to idspose of their
business in the east and return
to Harbor to make their perma
nent home. They purchased the
Al Clement home several months
ago for that purpose.
The May Day tea given by the
Harbor Community club to raise
funds for the community library
was attneded by a largeg rowd,
which enjoyed the afternoon. A
great deal of the success of the
afternoon was due to the back
ground music played by Mrs. Viv
ian Hudson, and several songs
sung by Mrs. Karl Ostenburg,
Mrs. Kay Bolin and Mrs. Hudson.
Both the Winchuck and Chetco
market roads suffered damage
during the recent heavy rains.
Slides blocked both roads Mon
day morning and bulldozers have
been kept busy keeping the roads
clear, as the slides kept recurring
after once being cleared.
Mrs. .Nora Simmons is under-
going surgery at the Indian hos-
pital at Tacoma.
Mr. and Mrs. Earl McPherson
are visiting relatives in southern
and central California for a few
weeks.
The World’s Best Clitnate
If anyone wants to know how
it feels to tangle with a Grey
hound bus, just ask Lyle Dill, as
he tried it Sunday, and came off
second best. The Greyhound was
“oing north on the Chetco river
bridge, when Mr. Dill had to
put on his brakes to keep from
running into the back of the car
ahead of him, which had slowed
down when it saw the Greyhound

coming toward it on u.c bridge.
The Dill car skidded out of con
trol and the wet pavement, and
ran into the bus. Mr. Dill suffer
ed many cuts on his face and
bruises all over his body, but is
able to be out. Bis car was a
total wreck. If both vehicles had
not been going at a moderate
speed, the results could have been
much worse.
