THURSDAY, APRIL 14, 1949 Crowd Present At Flower Fesstival At Smith River SMITH RIVER—Flow’er Festi val, held Wednesday afternoon, was a big success, with over 500 visitors as guests of the Womens Club at its annoul spring flower show’, held in the afternoon and evening. The main hall and stage w’ere beuatiful with many flow’ers ar ranged to form a setting for a flower garden. Guests were registered, giving their addresses from Grants Pass, O'Brien, Cave Junction, Ashland, Klamath Fall s, Brooking and Harbor, Ore., Oakland, Palo Al- to, Hollywood, Alhambra, Eu- reka and Arcata, Calif., who came to view’ the 122 daffodil specimens arranged and named, together w’ith many other beau- tiful spring flow’ers. Mrs. Forest Dunham, general chairman, and her committee had worked faithfully to make this affair the success it was voted. Continuous tea and sandwich es serving was maintained dur ing the afternoon from lace-cov ered tea tables. Others serving as chairmen of committees were : Plant sale—Zelna Maris. Cut flowers — Frances West- brook. Specimens—Grace Hight. Flower arrangements — Mabe Maris. Indian booth—Una Rowley. Tea hostesses—Leah Wilson & Martha Ulrich. Sale of cut flow’ers and plants netted the club a tidy sum to be used for support of the local library. Easter Services Playmed Plans are being made for the Easter sunrise service by the local Methodist church, to be held on the beach at 6:30 to 8, below the Shaker church. Mrs. Nell Price has returned to her home at Lebanon after being at the home of Mrs. Ida Hubbell and Mrs. Nellie Rode- haver since last fall. After having let their hall bo used by other organizations for the past few’ months for the many benefit programs and dances the Grange plans to give a dance of its own Saturday evening with Tom Ewing of Crescent City and his orchesstra furnishing the mu sic for the event. Smith River News Items Mrs. Mabel Browne who has been staying with her son-in-law and daughter, Hr. and Mrs. Har old Horn in Crescent City, re turned to her home here and plans to take her .position as a clerk in Westbrook'Market. Mrs. Horn is steadily gaining strength from a recent major operation. The main friends of Mrs. Ella Plaisted are glad to hear she is improving from her recent ill ness, following an attack of flu. John Prock, pioneer resident of Smith River, w’ho has been in failing health, was taken to the Seaside hospital the first of the week for medical attention. Legion Convention Coming, May 21 Queen Selection Ball, Set May 23 Selection of the queen to reign over the 1949 Azalea Festival, will be an event of Saturday, April 23, it was announced by the Azalea Festival Association, following its meeting Monday. At present there are 23 junior and senior girls of Brookings high school who will compete, The plan of having the girls name the queen has been decided upon by the association. Remembering past selection halls, local people are expected to buy up many of the advance sale tickets which will be sold during the week-end. While not definitely set, date of the 1949 Festival may be May 21, contingent, of course, on the progress made by the azaleas.
