THURSDAY, APRIL 14. 1949 BROOKINGS-HARBOR PILOT. BROOKINGS. OREGON ,A. A. A. Signup Closes May First county, the people of Gold Beach have no reason to “deplore” the attitude of those of us who live in the Brookings-Harbor area. Before Mr. Buffington rushed im petuously into his published ac cusations of a lack of a kindred feeling, on the part of Brook ings for Gold Beach, it seems to me that he should first have contacted the Brookings chamber of commerce. Had he done so he would have discovered that, in the matter under discussion, one or two members of the Brook ing chamber of commerce, acting on their own initiative, speak ing only for themselves, without authority from the Brookings chamber of commerce, apparently opposed the construction of a har bor at the mouth of the Rogue river. Any opposition, expressed in this matter, could only be the individual expression of one or two individuals. 1 presume that an individual m a y express his personal opinion. I will admit that opposition to the construc tion of a harbor at Gold Beach is a mistake. I conclude, there fore, that there is nothing that appears in t h i s matter which would justify any public excite ment. I know that any person who opposes the construction of a har bor at Gold Beach does not speak for me and I am, further, of the opinion that such person does not speak for the great majority! of the three thousand residents} of southern Curry county. We, who live in southern Curry coun-1 ty, hasten to assure the people} of Gold Beach that we are en tirely in sympathy with them in their venture to construct a suf ficient and adequate harbor in their fine city. Such a harbor would be of great benefit to the entire county. Out of this controversy, which should be immediately and de cisively put to an end, we arc confronted by two facts. First, Gold Beach should have an ade quate and sufficient harbor, and, second, Brookings should be con nected with U. S. Highway 199 by a road built up the Chetco river. It is very important, to the best interests of all of us, that these two projects should be com menced at once and, to the ex clusion of all other projects, be speedily completed. Maybe it is time for us to change horses. To permit Gold Beach and Brookings to be at each other’s throat is s t u p i d. Neither of us is large tnough to carry the budens of Curry coun ty alone. Working together we would be greatly strengthened. I am sure that there is a suffi cient number of men and women, persons of vision, fairness and common sense, who would agree to enter into and lead such a movement. If such a group were’ to be brough into existence and supported by public opinion, if it wore wisely administered, it could act for and express the desires of all of us who are resi dents of Curry county. In my opinion the two most necessary projects for the devel opment of Curry county are the construction of the harborb at Gold Beach and the construction of a road from Brookings to U. S.
