John C. Porisch, Curry county campaign director, this week an nounced the selection of the fol lowing community chairmen for Curry county: Harbor—Mrs. Harriet Payne. Brookings—Mrs. Doris Free man. Gold Beach—Mrs. Harry Briggs Wedderbum — Mrs. Corrine Newhouse. Port Orford—Mrs. Lyle Crose, Sixes—C. W. Brooks. Denmark—Mrs. Elsie Quinn. Langlois—Mrs. Pauline Ander son. Agness and Illahe—Paul Talich The foregoing have volunteered their services in the drive to raise funds for the victims of infan tile paralysis. The county was again fortun ate in that no new case occurred during the past year. However, in Oregon the number of cases of polio or infantile paralysis in A ]948 were more than, double the number in 1947. In the United Slates the number of cases of the disease reached an all-time high ol approximately 30,000 cases exceeding the previous record ac- currence of 27,000 in 1916. North Carolina, Texas, and Caifornia were the 1948 centers oi the disease. $17,000,000 was spent for medical aid alone, and of this amount the antional head quarters supplied $6,500,000 to county chapters whose funds had Loen exhausted by Nov. 30. The need for a successful cam paign this year has never been greater. Since its beginning in 1938, the National Foundation of Infantile Paralysis has, through the March of Dimes, been able to provide the best available med ical care to every victim of the disease. If this policy and the research and educational program cl the organization are to con- tmue, the 1949 March of Dimes will have to be the greatest ever. Curry county and the State of Oregon have always been out standing contributors to March of Dimes. Last year Oregon was fourth in the United States and Curry county ranked 16th out of I Oregon’s 36 counties on a per capita basis. Curry county cam paign workers are fully confident that the emergency will be met.
