BROOKINGS-HARBOR PILOT, Bickings. Oregon THURSDAY. DECEMBER 9, 1918 Day ton Triumphed Over Henley Sat., TcJ Win 'B' Crown Dayton, noted for its tomatoes, corn, beans and football teams, lived up to advance dope Satur day to triumph over the Henley 1 eleven from Klamath county, 121 to 0, to win the mythical cham- ■ pionship of the ‘B’ schools of the state. Dayton, according to re ports, was never threatened, but had to extend every possible fl- ‘ nesse and energy to win. Last year, the Dayton -team was a challenger to this crown, but lost to the team which went ahead to win the crown. This year, all opposition looked weak in comparison until the Pirates entered the quarter and semi- finals. Mapleton, winner in this section of the state, fell, 20 to 7 almost two weeks ago. Coached by Everett McRey- nolds, the Pirates have been a high-scoring team all year, run ning up mammoth scores on most of their opponents, which seem ed to be powerless against them. LIcReynolds has been trying to ww a state ‘B* hoop crown for the past three years, always los ing out in the last few games of the state tournament. Predicted Higher Impetus For Dimes ■ ■ | PORTLAND, Dec 6 — Added importance was given Oregon’s 19494 March of Dimes today by a state board of health predic tion that the total number of polio cases in the state in 1948 will be 100 per cent above the figure for the previous year. “There is every indication that we will have twice as many cases as we had in 1947,” Dr. G. D. Carlyle, Thompson, state director of preventative medicine,! informed Felix Monttes, state representative for the national | foundation for infantile paral ysis. “As of this time last year ap proximately 90 cases had been, reported as compared to our pres ent total for 1948 of 185 cases.” Dr. Thompson said, “That means that 1948 already is Oregon’s fourth highest year both in num her of cases and ratio in re- spect to population, and there is a slim possibility that it may end as the third highest year.” The final figure on Dec. 31 may exceed 200 cases, according to Dr. Thompson who emphasized, however, that 250 cases would have had to occurred to estab lish 1948 as an epidemic year in the state as a whole. One case or more per 5000 population is considered epidemic incidence. Fourth Graders View Pilot Office At "Press" Time A few weeks ago, Mrs. Lillian Mathews, teacher of the fourth grade, brought her class to the Pilot office where the students observed the Pilot in process of publication. After watching the press, folder and linotype in ac tion, each student was given an opportunity to ask questions. Patricia Taylor expressed her observation and impressions in the best manner, according toi the faculty, and her letter is printed: A TRIP TO THE PRINT SHOP by Patricia Taylor “We read about print shops in our “Weekly Reader” and got the idea about going to the printing shop here. Mrs. Mathews asked Mr. Akers if we could come. He must have said, “Yes” be cause we went to the shop. We watched the printing presses. He told us a lot of interesting things about printing. He was working at the linotype. We also watched him put the pages on the press. He showed us how the papers were folded, It is a funny ma- chine. I liked the printing shop very much. Mr. Akers gave us a lead slug with our names on ’em. Benton and Yahmill, decclaring that Polk’s 24 cases this year represent a 1-1000 rate and add ing that “if Polk were Multa- nomah county we would be up to our necks in trouble.” Oregon is unusual in that polio attacks many persons in the northwests part of the state in late autumn and early winter, Dr. Thompson pointed out. Cool er weather invariably results in decreased incidences i n other areas, and Dr. Thompson said that the opposite trend in north western Oregon “merits a great deal of study.” team, during his stay at Dayton, while in grade school. It's absolutely true. You can go to most Eastern destinations via California and return over your choice of northern U. S. lines for no more rail fare than you pay to go straight East and back! We don’t blame people for thinking we’re kidding when we tell them about thia bargain. It certainly seems like all those extra miles and scenic attractions—plus the winter sunshine of San Francisco, Los Angeles, Palm Springs, Phoenix and Tucson—should cost a wliale of a lot more rail fare. But it doesn’t. In fact, if your destination is New York, you can even add New Orleans to your trip! The best way we can prove we’re not kidding is with an actual ticket. When you go East, ask your ticket agent to route your ticket East thru California. See for yourself. “'’e friendly .¡ern Pacific See your nearest S. P. agent, or write J. A.
