'oitral Building STEV EN SO N Brookings, Oregon The house is about to vote on the president’s recommendation for aid to Greece and Turkey. The senate passed this^bill re cently by an overwhelming vote. Having had an opportunity to examine this quesetion from all angles, and profiting by reading the excellent debate on the sub-j ject in the senate, I have reach ed the conclusion that, as the lesser of the two evils, we should proceed to pass the bill. If we were to refuse to com ply with the president’s request, we would be serving notice on all Europe, and especially Rus sia, that the people of this coun try will no longer support an ef fort for peace and free govern ment there that we are unwill ing to finish the job. So, I think we should approve the proposal, but in granting this aid to Greece and Turkey, we must realize it is a decisive step, anti we must be prepared to fol low through to the end on this policy. The end, we hope, will be a genuine peace, and genuinely free, peaceful govrnmnts in Eu rope. • • • I am making a quick trip out to Oregon this week and back, so there will be no “Letter from Washington” next w-eek.
