Local News li è By Dewey W riting a column for a news paper with the editor, m ust, it is presumed, be compared to a housewife in her planning of the meals her family will be served. One column, like one meal, may be a “lark.” but repeated efforts really bear heavy before the year is up. L ik e (i meal, a column m ust have spice to m ake it palatable. It is permissible, at tim es, to just put in the ‘‘left-overs,” but this becomes old, a fte r a time. Cons tantly the housewife watches the season for t id-bits to tem pt the lagging appetites, so likewise the editor of a column m ust scan the horizon for his choice morsels of w it to “feed info the linotype.” An editor doesn't necessarily w ant his readers to agree with him that would become m onot onous. In addition, local people have become so lax in ob serving traffic rules because of this lack of police protection, it is little w onder that many, when in larg e r places, can rem em ber such rules. From E x ch a n g es: COQUILLE—A p arty of high way surveyors from the Oregon state highway office will arrive here early in December to s ta rt surveys of the proposed new high way which will skirt the edge of Coquille and cross the Coquille river a t the edge of town, it was announced this week by Hode Caughell who has arranged hotel reservations for the party. The survey party is well ahead of planned schedule and President Evan Albom stated th at this was a concrete exam ple of w hat the visit of R. H. Baldock, state en gineer, has done for the work project on Highway 101. M anager Thompson of the Hotel Coquille has arranged to t a k e care of the party which will be made up of at least six men and not more than eight. It is the belief of the Cham ber of Commerce highway com m ittee that a survey now is a real cause of rejoicing as it seems probable th at construction work on this end of 101 might s ta rt much sooner than originally expected. At present the sta te highway commission has $600,000 to spend on the Coquille-M arshfield high way and costs at the present time average $125,000 to $150,000 per mile.
