Home of The Croft Lily Pine Cone Books Three Show Hits To start the week of coming shows, Pine Cone Theatre has billed “Spiral Staircase, starring Dorothy McGuire, George Brent and Ethel Barrymore, in a show which isn’t just the thing for people with weak hearts. It is filled with suspense from begin ning to end. Billed Friday and Saturday, this show had an add ed attraction of a cartoon. Danny Kaye, said to be the find of the movie Industry, wall carry the lead in Sunday, Mon day and Tuesday’s show, “Won der man,” and will be supported by Virginia Mayo, another find in the movie business. All in tech nicolor, this show will captivate Brookings showgoers. What the young widow must face, coming as it does after the end of a war, will be shown next Wednesday and Thursday when Jane Russell and Louis Hayworth carry leads in “Young Widow.” A cartoon will be an added fea ture of this show. Kitchen Hints From MARY ANN JOHNSON By placing a jar ring under a dish that is being placed on ice, the ring will stick to both ice and dish, thus preventing it from slipping. A little baking soda added to boiling syrup will prevent it from crystallizing: a l i t t l e vinegar, will likewise prevent syrup from returning to sugar. Little scraps of soap tied in a cloth or bag is excellent for the cleaning of bathtubs or granite- wear, etc. Broken bits of licorice sprinkled about pantry shelves will, it is said, banish red ants. Borax will do likewise. Use crystal rather than the powdered. The lid of the teapot should always lift open so the air may get in. This presents mustiness. The same rule, of course, applies to the coffee pot.
