We Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) is a medication that can be used to reduce the likelihood of HIV infection. PrEP reduces the risk by about 99% when taken as prescribed. PrEP works by blocking an HIV enzyme which prevents it from establishing an infection in the body. PrEP is taken once daily as an oral pill and an injectable version may also be available. Once prescribed PrEP, it is recommended to visit your doctor every three months for repeat tests, refills, and follow up. What can HIV Alliance do to help? Our PrEP Coordinators work with your current PCP (Primary Care Provider) or identify a provider who can prescribe PrEP, and they can help explain the series of labs your doctor will conduct before writing a prescription. HIV Alliance holds regular PrEP clinics where you can get tested, have your prescription written for you, and get it filled at the pharmacy of your choice.
