It’s appalling how much trash and garbage we encounter along the way. Some is from convenience store purchases, some from those liv- ing in tents along the street and railroad tracks. As I look around, I realize there are no bins or dumpsters to put the trash in. I’m certain most people would use them if they were available. Another idea: Hire the resident un- housed to patrol the neighborhood to pick up trash, and deposit it in the new trash cans or dumpsters. Bill Klupenger Eugene YES, THIS IS CLASS WARFARE Todd Reed (Letters 3/24) claims Eugene’s proposals to open up single- family home zoning, as required by HB 2001, will result in 42-foot apartment buildings whose renters will park on the street. Horrors! My heart just bleeds for this privileged middle-class homeowner who will be forced to live with renters in his neighborhood. Nowhere in his letter is the slight- est awareness that Eugene is in a rental housing crisis, resulting in a homeless- ness crisis. All he wants to do is keep his cozy neighborhood the same, by keep- ing us out. I actually hope all his catastrophic ex- pectations come true, although I doubt it. This is just class warfare. They’ve had their day, and that day has passed. NIMBYs need to shut up and get the hell out of our way. Lynn Porter Eugene HB 2001 HURTS HOMEOWNERS I’m worried about HB 2001, for my- self and others living in R-1, suppos- edly protected neighborhoods. It took my wife and me 60 years to realize our dream of owning our own home. We worked hard for it. The new zoning change, if imple- mented, takes the carpet out from un- der homeowners who carefully invested in their homes. We bought our home feeling our invest- ment was safe and secure. We also invest- ed money in new fl ooring, a new heating system, new electrical wiring, improved the bath and kitchen, painted inside and out and added new double-pane windows plus many more improvements. We un- derstood that these improvements would increase the value of our investment. It was our intention to use any in- crease in value for future medical and nursing home costs. That appreciation, the very reason we bought the home, may not occur if there is a drastic dis- ruption in zoning laws. I do not want a duplex or a multiplex next to my home. Many years ago I was a residential appraiser. A multiplex next to a single family home lowered its value. I’m not saying that all renters are careless, but they are not invested, so they have no incentive to care for the property. Now comes the HB 2001 law that threatens my long term investment, and my life long dream of owning a home in a compatible neighborhood. Somehow this is not right. Joe R. Blakely Eugene AN OVERDOSE OF IRONY Anybody else notice that censorship has spread from the right wing (Alex Jones, Donald Trump) to the left wing (Glenn Greenwald, Chris Hedges)? Isn’t it ironic that anti-war activists from the ’60’s-70’s have been turned into pro-war advocates now? A little bit too ironic.
