During its long, healthy life, the lighthouse has warned mariners of the shallow reef alongside the massive headland and served as a U.S. Coast Guard station during World War II. Today, people use the lighthouse more for the Heceta Lighthouse Bed and Breakfast, which was once the keeper’s house — the only Queen Anne-style keeper home in the U.S. The birthday party will take place in the keeper’s house. The U.S. Coast Guard will kick off the party with an opening ceremony. Hot dogs, refreshments and cupcakes, as well as live music, will be available for partygoers. If the weather turns sour, some activities — like live music and lawn games — could be cancelled. The party will include Siuslaw Pioneer Museum’s Heritage Players dressed up in period clothing, transporting you back to Heceta’s heyday. Heceta’s birthday bash is 4 to 7 pm Saturday, March 30. The lighthouse is located off Highway 101, 13 miles north of Florence.
