Meyer Children shows have a sick monopoly on puppetry. Instead, as we get older, we assume puppets are just ways to describe governments controlled by outside forces. By attending Cthulhu: the Musical! — presented by Oregon’s only puppet musical horror troupe Pupeteers for Fears – you’re helping reclaim the art form. The play is adapt- ed from the 1929 short story, The Call of Cthulhu by H.P. Lovecraft and tells the story of the badass elder god who hibernates beneath the ocean and communicates through human dreams, causing madness. “We are always looking to turn classic themes on their head instead of rehashing tired storylines,” says PFF Artistic Director Josh Gross. “So when thinking about what our next piece might be, I sometimes add the words, ‘the musical,’ to different phras- es in conversation to see how people react, if it has that magic combination of familiar hook, and new twist.” The show features Muppet-style puppets and includes a full rock band and visual arts courtesy of visual artist Aubry Hollingshead. The musical play has been selling out venues across the West Coast and the troupe is stopping in Eugene before Cthulhu takes over Los Angeles. Cthulhu: the Musical!, directed by Beth Boulay and script and original songs by playwright Josh Gross, takes over Sam Bond’s Garage, located at 407 Blair Boulevard, 8 pm Sunday, July 1.
