LET TERS ELECTED AUDITOR SENDS MESSAGE When will they ever listen? Is prop- er City Council staff oversight and ac- countability too much to expect? Measure 20-283, for an elected city auditor, offers Eugeneans our loudest mes- sage to City Hall. Oops ... Well, we used to have a city hall, before it was replaced by an empty, crushed concrete pit, fanning city offices throughout town at $1.3-mil- lion taxpayer-funded rents per year. A desolate square block now ex- ists where once stood a magnificent, 100,000-square-foot imaginative and wel- coming governmental complex and coun- cil chambers. World-renowned Turner Construction estimated that it could have been affordably rehabilitated; but other agendas were at work. More than 13,000 Eugenians, playing fairly and by the rules, signed Measure 20-283 petitions which were circulated by volunteers in fog and rain. They honored Oregon’s hallowed initiative process and deserved a clean vote. Measure 20-287, by contrast, was a last minute effort by political insiders to muddy the waters and put forth malodor- ous and disingenuous red herrings about “affordability.” We should look no further than that empty gravel pit to resolve any question over which measure to support. Measure 20-283 sends a message that will be heard. Scott Bartlett Eugene navigate the stormy seas upon us and ahead of us. He is willing to take the helm and will trust in the stars (all of us together) when all the old maps fail to provide direction. That is why I support Tim Laue and am asking the EW readership and editors to take a deeper look into what this dedicated citizen has to offer. Elizabeth Chandler Eugene PLAYS WELL WITH OTHERS LAUE FOR THE PEOPLE This challenge requires an informed leader with eyes and heart wide open to the urgency we collectively face. I have known Tim Laue for 19 years and he is that leader. Tim Laue isn’t running [for East Lane County commissioner] to prove anything; he is stepping up to contribute his very best effort to the task of bringing people togeth- er to form effective communities that cher- ish the environment and each other. His plans include employing a repre- sentative from each watershed to help or- ganize and bring forth their unique story and voice. Problems and barriers are being identified and solutions will be developed through shared strengths and vision. He is and has always been a fierce advo- cate for the most vulnerable in our county. Tim was recently asked to mentor other court- appointed special advocates (CASA). Foster children in Lane County are amongst the most vulnerable with no voice. Laue not only offers a wealth of expe- rience and accomplishments to the role of East Lane County commissioner, he has the necessary depth and wisdom required to Nora Kent is running for West Lane County commissioner. I have known and worked with her at Lane Community Col- lege and in other community endeavors for years. She’s a quick learner. She may not be a slick politician or have connections to big industry, but I think that is a good thing. Kent is a common sense, collaborative problem-solver and has worked and will continue to work for the common people. She knows how to navigate bureaucratic systems. She believes in citizens’ right to petition and manage their own place of residence — and will be responsive to the people of rural and West Lane County.
