December 7, 2017 • eugeneweekly.com DanceAbility International, a dance troupe that provides “opportunities for people with and without disabili- ties,” according to its website, will be pairing up with the University of Oregon’s senior dance majors for a collaborative performance this week called “Spectrum.” DanceAbility International director Alito Alessi formed the DanceAbility dance method in 1987 with Karen Nelson. Some of the DanceAbility method’s goals are “to help ex- plore and uproot misconceptions and prejudice between people with and without disabilities” and “to encourage the evolution and performance of contemporary dance and new dance.” Alessi has been a guest teacher for the UO dance class involved in the collaboration, the press release says, and this has given the students “skills to work with dancers with various disabilities.” The concert will include pieces by DanceAbility’s choreographers and UO undergrad dance students. Spectrum will take place 7 pm Thursday, Dec. 7, at the Dougherty Dance Theater in the Gerlinger Annex on the UO campus.
