WHAT’S HAPPENING Educator and author Walidah Imarisha is coming to the UO Campus to give a lecture titled “Why Aren’t There More Black People in Oregon?: A Hidden History.” Imarisha describes herself as a “historian at heart, reporter by (w)right and rebel by reason,” according to her website. She has taught at Stanford University, Portland State and Oregon State. According to her website, she also spent six years with “Oregon Humanities’ Conversation Project as a public scholar facilitating programs across Oregon about Oregon Black history, alternatives to incarceration and the history of hip hop.” Imarisha was most recently apart of Corvallis’ We are the Changemakers: A Conference for Women and Their Allies, an event which took place last month. Imarisha’s talk in Eugene will be followed with a Q&A. The event is sponsored by the UO’s Center for the Study of Women in Society and cosponsored by other organizations such as the UO’s Division of Equity & Inclusion. “Why Aren’t There More Black People in Oregon?: A Hidden History” takes place from 3:30 to 5 pm Thursday, Oct. 12, in the Lillis Business Complex’s Lillis 182 Lecture Hall on the UO Campus (955 E. 13th Avenue).
