Our Call to Greatness,” author
Betsy Hartmann, 6pm, down-
town library. FREE.
Kick the summer off right with the Museum of Natural and Cultural History’s Ready, Set, Get
Outside, a June 20 Summer Solstice event. The museum has partnered with organizations
geared toward adventuring in the outdoors for an all-in-one summer stop. Those organiza-
tions include Wild Birds Unlimited and Whole Earth Nature School, which are each offering
resources about ways to enjoy the outdoors. Friends of Trees will also be providing volunteer
information about local tree planting. Oregon authors Ruby McConnell, Abby Phillips Metzger
and Kathleen Dean Moore, all authors of outdoor- and nature-oriented books, will also be at
the event. Ready, Set, Get Outside is chockfull of more hands-on activities as well. At 5:30
pm, guests can join a nature walk through the Whilamut Natural Area. There will also be live
marimba music by the band Jenaguru in the museum courtyard, with a chance for audience
members to practice on traditional Zimbabwean instruments. Claim 52 brewing, Coconut
Bliss and Red Five Hotdog Co. will all be present with offerings of local food and beer.
Ready, Set, Get Outside is 4-7 pm on Tuesday, June 20, at the Museum of Natural and Cultural
History (1680 E. 15th Avenue) on the University of Oregon campus. Admission to the event is
FREE if you bring a non-perishable food donation for FOOD for Lane County. — Meerah Powell
