WHAT’S HAPPENING THURSDAY APRIL 20 One person’s trash is another one’s treasure, as the saying goes. The annual Metamorphose up-cycled fashion show is “one of Lane County’s most unique and fascinating fashion and recycling events,” according to St. Vincent de Paul Society of Lane County, and the Saturday evening events highlights just how beautiful cast-off materials can be. Metamorphose founder Mitra DeMirza Chester is SVdP’s own in-house art and fashion designer and she’s been taking yesterday’s scraps and turning them into hip apparel for the nonprofit since 2013. SVdP says that the Earth Day competition “will feature 14 designers who have transformed discarded materials ranging from fabric scraps to neck ties to coffee-bean bags into outfits that their models will wear.” Come take a look at the original couture on the runway, along with BRING Recycling’s Product Design Challenge, which asks participants to “transform salvaged materials into new and relevant products such as furniture, home décor, accessories, tools and more.” And sticking with the theme of transforming trash into treasure, the winners of MECCA’s April 21 Object Afterlife Art Challenge will be featured as well. “We inspire our community to reimagine unwanted materials while breaking down the financial barriers to the arts and creativity,” MECCA Director Heather Campbell says in a press release for the event. MECCA’s Object Afterlife artist reception and awards ceremony is 6 pm to 8 pm, Friday, April 21, at MECCA: Materials Exchange Center for Community Arts, 449 Willamette Street. FREE.
