WHAT’S HAPPENING THURSDAY JANUARY 12 S U N R I S E 7: 4 5 A M ; S U N S E T 4 : 57 P M AV G. HIGH 4 6 ; AV G. LO W 33 Trump’s inauguration is Jan. 20, and our community will have to learn how to handle “Trumpism” as the official position of the Unit- ed States. How better to prepare than to figure out just what the hell Trumpism is? “Trumpism and Ethics” is a public forum planned by concerned citizen Michael Hejazi. He wants the community to discuss the dis- tinction between Trump the human being and Trumpism as a cultural and political phenome- non. “This is not and anti-Trump event,” Hejazi says. “People who give a shit are going to come together for an event where we will discuss what ethics means in a Trump presidency.” The makeshift panel will include a represen- tative from the Eugene Islamic Center, local psychologists and a chair of the Democratic Party of Oregon. “We want this to be an open dialogue about what is a very confounding situation,” Hejazi says. The goal of the forum is to define Trumpism, what he calls “a new class of political leadership which is very hopeful to some extent but has a dark and dangerous undertone,” and discuss its effect on ethics. Members of the public who attend are each given 5 minutes to present their ideas and concerns. Trumpism and Ethics — a public discussion about the role of ethics in a Trump era starts 2 pm Sunday, Jan. 15 at the Eugene Public Library in the Singer Room. — Kelly Kenoyer 14 January 12, 2017 • eugeneweekly.com GATHERINGS Downtown Public Speakers Toastmasters Club, drop-ins welcome noon-1:05pm today & Thursday, Jan. 19, Les Lyle Conference Rm, fourth floor Wells Fargo Bldg., 99 E.
