For more info, contact James at 505-5662. Bird lovers have something to look forward to in the New Year: the 75th annual Christmas Bird Count. On the first of the year, hundreds of bird lovers will be counting birds in a 15-mile radius in Eugene for the Lane County Audubon society. Count coordinator Dick Lamster says, “There’s over 2,500 of these bird counts in North America.” The Eugene count is split into 27 areas, each led by an expert bird watcher with “anywhere between five and 15 members of the team,” Lamster says. The event is free to the public, and anyone can join. “Most of our participators have been birders in the past, but some are beginners,” he says. For those who want to join, Lamster tells EW, “It’s not too late! I’m the compiler for the whole thing so they just need to contact me by email by Friday.” The total bird count for the area, which can be as high as 130 species and 120,000 individual birds, he says, is compiled and sent to the National Audubon Society for its national database. Lamster says an individual team can see as many as 50 species, and that people can count from their own backyard as well. “That’s what makes bird watching so much fun.” The 75th Annual Christmas Bird Count, all day, Sunday, Jan. 1.
