Not just that we laugh so we don’t cry, but laughing as an act of resistance, of irreverence, of critique, to the powers that be. Especially since ol’ Trumpsky has a vocal disdain for free speech and a penchant for lawsuits, including suing comedian Bill Maher for joking that the president-elect had an orangutan for a father. So, ringing in the New Year with a night of comedy seems more apropos than ever, and Springfield’s Wildish Community Theater has it locked in with a Pro-Bone-O fundraiser: “Comedians Gone Wild(ish) New Year’s Eve Blow-Out Extravaganza” features headlining Portland-turned-Los Angeles comedian Gabe Dinger, as well as local stand- up veterans Leigh Anne Jasheway (who’s also the event organizer) and Mike McGowan; Melody Dodd hosts. “He’s a rapid-fire jokester,” Jasheway says of Dinger. “He was named by the Portland Mercury as a punchline machine.” As for McGowan, Jasheway says until fairly recently, she had only seen McGowan do short sets, but then they performed together at The Green Room downtown and he stretched out. “Mike is a storyteller comic,” she says. “I had no idea he had this much talent.” Proceeds go to Pro-Bone-O, a nonprofit that provides veterinary care for the pets of the homeless.
