WHAT’S HAPPENING THURSDAY AUGUST 25 S U N R I S E 6 : 2 8 A M ; S U N S E T 7: 5 9 P M AV G. HIGH 82 ; AV G. LO W 5 0 There’s just something about an airport runway. The vast expanse of tarmac, the giant planes taking off and landing, the people scurrying around amid the huge machines, helping them launch into the air and depart for parts unknown. For those of us who have sat and stared out a plane window, wishing we could run around in the fields and lanes of the airport, there’s the Fifth annual Air Fair and 5K on the Runway this Saturday at Eugene’s Mahlon Sweet Airport. If running around on a runway, with heat waves shimmering on an August day, sounds insane, don’t worry. Organizers from the Active 20-30 Club of Eugene and the airport say that the chip-timed course has “plenty of water features along the course to keep people cool, including a fire truck water arch at the race start line and a slippery slide finish at the finish line.” The 5K race starts at 2 pm, preceded by a free kids’ fun run at 1:45 pm. The events start at 11 am and include a dunk tank, airplanes to check out, free “Young Eagle’s Exploratory Flights” and a local food truck and beer garden. The day concludes after a 3 pm awards ceremony and airline ticket giveaway. Fifth Annual Air Fair and 5K on the Runway, 11 am Saturday, Aug. 27 at Eugene’s Mahlon Sweet Field Airport. 5K is $25, race shirts $10. Parking in the EUG overflow parking lot on Northrup Drive and a free shuttle to the east aviation ramp. For more info go to eugene2030.org. Other events are FREE. 16 A ugust 25, 2016 • eugeneweekly.com BENEFITS Bee Jazzy: A Benefit to Save Bees, 5:30-9pm, Silvan Ridge Winery, 27012 Briggs Hill Rd. $30.
