Where once there was merely a KISS Army (the name for KISS’ official fanclub), there seems to have grown a KISS Industrial Complex. KISS, now more than 40 years running, is thought to be the most successful band in rock history when it comes to merchandising. In fact, the wavy line between rock group and shopping mall novelty has blurred so much that even band members some- times mistake themselves for living, breathing tchotchkes; few years back, KISS frontman Gene Simmons told CNN Money: “My favorite piece of merchandising is me.” Simmons estimates that KISS is a billion dollar industry. Over the years the band has officially licensed approximately 3,000 KISS-themed products: T-Shirts, booty shorts, board games, tote bags, trading cards, condoms, plush toys, Christmas tree ornaments, bath towels, comic books, pinball machines, protective cellphone and iPad cases, barbeque sauce, golf club covers, M&Ms and much more. Diehard KISS Army recruits can even be buried in official KISS coffins. Whatever it is you want, you can find it with a flaming KISS logo emblazoned on it. The lucrative theatrical hard rock glam band brings its Freedom to Rock Tour to Eugene Saturday, check out the merch tables. KISS: Freedom to Rock begins 8pm Saturday, July 9, the Matthew Knight Arena, UO; $39-$125. — Ben Ricker 28 July 7, 2016 • eugeneweekly.com NAMI Connection Support Group for people with mental health issues, 1-2:30pm today & Thursday, July 14, 2411 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. FREE.
