Left paralyzed after a car accident and dependent on medical support systems, he is disinclined to wallow among beeping, sanitized hospital equipment. Ken chooses death. The rub, in this particular case, is that he’s not allowed to. This is the story of Whose Life Is It Anyway?, which opens Friday at the Very Little Theater. For VLT director Cindy Solari, the plot line of this play is more than just speculation. “I am a dialysis patient in end-stage renal failure due to a rare disease called vasculitis,” Solari explains. This production marks Solari’s return to theater after a 6-year absence following her diagnosis. “There are many ways I relate with the character of Ken,” she says. “We would both die if we stop treatment. The battle we face is sobering and extremely hard. And we both use humor to help others cope with it, and fight for our right to make decisions about our care.” Solari says she hopes that beyond entertaining audiences, this production will encourage awareness. Whose Life is it Anyway? runs July 1-10 at Very Little Theatre, 2350 Hilyard St.; $12, for tickets and times, visit thevlt.com or call 541-344-7751. — Anna Grace J e h o t u r e n k ey a OR T BACH N O EG FEST I VA ON THE AIR “The Point,” 9-9:30am, KPOV 88.9FM.
